Chapter 27

Mitch

I’m at the bottom of a pile of very excited and well-built men, and normally this would be the beginning of some sort of erotic dream sequence, but this is even better. I just drove in the game winning runs. A walk-off win, in the home opener. The only thing better would be if it were the play-offs.

The team is congratulating me, climbing all over me and pulling at my clothes. It’s one large tangle of limbs, shouting and slapping each other’s backs. By the time I escape the melee, I’m missing my batting helmet and possibly a few clumps of my hair. So worth it.

We all start back toward the dugout, headed for the locker room where there will be more celebrating, an inspirational speech from Coach, and most importantly, a hot shower.

“It wasn’t as good as my game winner against Chicago State last year,” Alex says, coming up beside me and smacking my ass.

“Of course not,” I laugh, still trying to catch my breath.

I stop at my locker to drop off my clothes and grab my shampoo and towel. Out of habit, I check my phone before heading to the shower. I scroll through several congratulatory texts, but am stopped cold by one from Britt.

ANSWER YOUR PHONE.

I check my missed calls. Thirteen, all from Britt.

Ice rushes through my veins. I call her back.

“Mitch, thank God,” she says when she answers.

“What’s going on? Is April okay?”

“No. Shit. I’m so sorry.”

My heartbeat speeds up. I glance around the room, then huddle closer to my locker. “What are you talking about? Where is she?”

“We’re at Northwestern Memorial. In the ER.”

“What happened?”

“She OD’d. Or whatever you call it when it’s alcohol? Alcohol poisoning, I guess.”

“Fuck!” I shout, and several of the other guys look at me.

“I know. I know. I’m so sorry, this is all my fault.”

“It’s not your fault,” I assure her. “You’re at Northwestern?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay, I’m on my way.”

“Okay. Oh, um, I didn’t know how to get ahold of your parents.”

My parents. Right. “Okay. Thank you. I’ll call them. I’ll be there in twenty minutes, okay?”

“Okay. Okay, thank you.”

Britt doesn’t sound good. We hang up, and I take a second to breathe and try to process what the hell is going on. April is in the ER. Alcohol poisoning. I don’t really know what that means. Is it serious? Could she die?

I’m just standing at my locker in shock when Alex comes up to me. He’s damp and fresh from his shower, wearing jeans and a t-shirt. “Man, did you get lost? The showers are literally right there.” He points.

“I have to go,” I say. I grab my backpack and run out of the locker room toward my car.

“Mitch!” Alex shouts after me. “What the hell?”

“I’ll explain later!” I yell over my shoulder, and then I’m gone.

I have a lot of time to think on the drive over to the hospital. About April, obviously, and what the hell happened. Things haven’t been good since she lost her job. I should have known something like this would happen.
